Kurucay Dam Irrigation Project

Irrigation investments implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) in Diyarbakir continue to equip the city's fertile agricultural lands with modern irrigation systems.

Agricultural Transformation Through Modern Irrigation

DSI Director General Kaya Yildiz stated that modern irrigation projects developed and put into practice in recent years have significantly increased agricultural productivity. Emphasizing that modern irrigation systems have diversified production patterns and directly increased farmer incomes, Yildiz expressed that these developments contribute to reducing poverty and preventing migration in line with rural development goals.

Silvan Project and Kurucay Dam Irrigation

Noting that water structures recently constructed in Diyarbakir and its districts have played a critical role in the development of agricultural activities in the region, Yildiz drew attention to the works carried out within the scope of the Silvan Project. In this context, he announced that significant progress has been made in the construction of the Kurucay Dam Irrigation, one of the storage irrigations of the Silvan Project, which will irrigate a total area of 2,350,000 decares.

Yildiz stated that 9,450 decares of agricultural land have been made ready for irrigation within the scope of the project, with a target of increasing this area to 10,650 decares by the end of 2020. He noted that upon completion of the project, a total of 50,300 decares of agricultural land will be opened for irrigation. He indicated that approximately 18 percent of the works have been completed.

Technical Progress and Economic Contribution

Providing information on technical works, DSI Director General Kaya Yildiz reported that 8 kilometers of irrigation line and 22 kilometers of HDPE pipe installation have been completed within the scope of the project, and that pipe laying and engineering structure construction on the main pipeline and network lines are continuing at a rapid pace.

Yildiz stated that the realization of the Kurucay Dam Irrigation Project is expected to contribute approximately TRY 38,560,000 annually to the national economy, adding that the project holds strategic importance for regional agriculture and the national economy.
